Governor's Commission on Abandoned Mine Voids and Mine Safety; Public Hearing

   The Governor's Commission on Abandoned Mine Voids and Mine Safety (Commission) will hold two public hearings to assist the Commission in gathering information to develop recommendations on improvements to underground mining practices and miner safety within this Commonwealth. The first hearing will be held Thursday, October 3, 2002, at the Johnstown Holiday Inn, 250 Market St., Johnstown, PA. The second hearing will be held Wednesday October 9, 2002, at the Pottsville Quality Inn, 100 S. Centre St., Pottsville, PA. Both hearings will begin at 9 a.m.

   The Commission's mission, as established by Executive Order No. 2002-10 (Sec. 32 Pa.B. 4690 (September 28, 2002).), is ''to investigate and document the hazards posed by abandoned mine voids, in particular the flooding of adjacent operating mines, and to make recommendations regarding the accurate location of voids and avoidance of other hazards associated with mining.'' Members of the public may present testimony that is relevant to the Commission's mission at the hearing. To guarantee a place on the agenda, interested persons are requested to submit, in writing, a statement of interest and a description of their professional background and/or affiliation prior to the meeting to Thomas Callaghan by fax at (717) 783-4675 or e-mail at tcallaghan@state.pa.us. The time allotted for testimony will be limited based on the agenda and number of persons requesting to present testimony. Persons who testify may be subject to follow-up questions from Commission members.

   The agenda and meeting materials will be available through the Department of Environmental Protection's (Department) Public Participation Center on the Department's website at http://www.dep.state.pa.us.
