[Saturday, January 17, 2009]

The Department of Community and Economic Development (Department), Center for Community Development, is anticipating applying for funding through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development.

The Emergency Shelter Grant Program (Program) is established within Subtitle B of Title IV of the Stewart B. McKinney Homeless Assistance Act (42 U.S.C.A. §§ 11371--11378). The Program authorizes grants for the rehabilitation or conversion of buildings for use as emergency shelters for the homeless, for the payment of certain operating expenses and essential services in connection with emergency shelters for the homeless, and for homeless prevention activities. The Program is designed to be the first step in a continuum of assistance to enable homeless individuals and families to move toward independent living, as well as to prevent homelessness.

One copy of the application may be submitted by local governments to the Department's Customer Service Center, 4th Floor, Commonwealth Keystone Building, 400 North Street, Harrisburg, PA 17120 in accordance with the Department's single application requirements. A copy of the application must also be sent to the appropriate regional office. The application window will open on January 17, 2009, and close at 5 p.m. on March 13, 2009. Applications received prior to or after these dates may not be considered for funding.
