MUNICIPAL POLICE OFFICERS' EDUCATION AND TRAINING COMMISSION

Basic Curriculum Increase of Hours

 The following notice is published in accordance with the requirements of 37 Pa. Code §§ 203.11(a)(11)(ii)(F) and 203.12(4)(i) (relating to qualifications; and waiver of training). At its quarterly meeting on September 14, 2017, the Municipal Police Officers' Education and Training Commission voted upon and approved the following changes to the Municipal Police Officers' Training Program (Program).

 Effective January 1, 2018, the number of hours in the basic police training course is increased to 919 hours. Various academic tests are administered throughout the Program, and they are grouped into and graded as a series of modules. Cadets are required to attain an 80% in each academic module for retention in the basic police training course. A Cadet who fails to attain an 80% in an academic module will be removed from the course and required to retake and successfully pass that academic module before being allowed to proceed to other areas of the curriculum. A second failure of an academic module will require the Cadet to successfully retake and pass the entire basic police training course to qualify for certification. Cadets who fail to attain an 80% in two separate modules shall be required to retake and pass the entire basic police training course in order to qualify for certification.

 Effective January 1, 2018, the minimum passing score for the Act 120 Certification Exam required for certification as a municipal police officer is 72%. Basic training applicants and applicants for waivers of training shall be permitted to the take the certification examination a maximum of three times and only once in any given day. Failure to pass the certification examination after three attempts shall result in the applicant being required to take and pass the entire basic police training course to qualify for certification.
