2020 Environmental Education Grants; Notice of Availability

[49 Pa.B. 6447]
[Saturday, October 26, 2019]

The Department of Environmental Protection (Department) is announcing the availability of funding for the 2020 Environmental Education Grant Program (Program). The Program will offer two types of awards—mini grants and general grants—for projects and additional consideration will be given to projects that address priority topics such as water quality, climate change and environmental justice.

The Program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993 (35 P.S. §§ 7521—7528), which mandates that 5% of fines and penalties collected by the Department be allotted towards environmental education programs in this Commonwealth. In its 25-year history, the Program has funded more than $12 million for environmental education projects Statewide. Awardees have included schools, nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, municipalities, county conservation districts and businesses.

Mini grants of up to $3,000 are available for local (school, county, municipality or other defined area) environmental education projects. General grants may be awarded in amounts ranging from $3,001—$20,000 (Level I) for implementation of large scale regional or Statewide environmental education projects or in amounts ranging from $20,001—$85,000 (Level II) for nonformal education projects that widely engage youth and teachers at the local, State and National levels. Additionally, general grant Level II projects must demonstrate that at least 30% of program participants are members of an environmental justice community as defined by the Department.

Grant guidelines and application instructions are available on the Department's web site at www.dep.pa.gov (select ''Residents,'' then ''Environmental Education,'' then ''Grants''). Applications must be submitted online through the Department of Community and Economic Development's Electronic Single Application web site, eGrants, at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us.

The Department will begin accepting applications on Thursday, October 31, 2019. Applications must be received by Tuesday, December 31, 2019.

Interested applicants with questions concerning the Program may contact the Department's Environmental Education and Information Center at RA-epEEgrants@pa.gov.
