2021 Environmental Education Grants; Notice of Availability

[50 Pa.B. 4819]
[Saturday, September 19, 2020]

The Department of Environmental Protection (Department) announces the opening of a new round of Environmental Education Grants for 2021. The grant round is now open.

Two types of awards, mini grants and general grants, are offered for projects with special consideration given to projects that address the 2021 Environmental Education Grants Program (Program) priorities of water, climate change and environmental justice.

Mini grants of up to $3,000 may be awarded for local (school, county, municipality or other defined area) environmental education projects. General grants may be awarded in amounts ranging from $3,001—$20,000 (Level I) for implementation of large scale regional or Statewide environmental education projects. A general grant may also be awarded in amounts ranging from $20,001—$85,000 (Level II) for nonformal education projects that widely engage youth and teachers at the local, State and National levels. Additionally, Level II projects must demonstrate at least 30% of program participants are members of an environmental justice area (as defined by the United States Census). For more information on environmental justice areas, visit https://www.dep.pa.gov/PublicParticipation/OfficeofEnvironmentalJustice/Pages/PA-Environmental-Justice-Areas.aspx.

The Program was established by the Environmental Education Act of 1993 (35 P.S. §§ 7521—7528), which mandates setting aside 5% of the pollution fines and penalties the Department collects annually for environmental education in the Commonwealth. In its 25-year history, the Program has funded more than $11 million in environmental education projects. Awards have been given to schools, nonprofit organizations, colleges and universities, county conservation districts, and businesses.

The Environmental Education Grant guidelines and application instructions are available on the Department's web site at www.dep.pa.gov (select the ''Grants'' icon, and look for ''Environmental Education—for educational projects in climate change, environmental justice, water quality, and other areas'').

All applications must be submitted online through the Commonwealth's Electronic Single Application web site at www.esa.dced.state.pa.us/Login.aspx. The Department is now accepting applications. Applications must be received by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, December 11, 2020. Hardcopy applications and late submissions will not be considered.

Questions concerning the 2021 Program can be directed to the Department's Environmental Education and Information Center at RA-epEEgrants@pa.gov or (717) 705-3767.
